AMCP Statement on Allowing Pharmacists to Administer REGEN-COV

Alexandria, Va., Aug. 23, 2021 — AMCP joins 11 pharmacist and pharmacy organizations in a letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra requesting an immediate amendment to the PREP Act declaration on COVID-19, which would allow pharmacists to order and administer REGEN-COV and future authorized products for the treatment of COVID-19.

AMCP CEO Susan Cantrell gave the below statement on the importance of this effort:

“As frontline health care providers for millions of Americans, pharmacists play a vital role in managing the spread of COVID-19 within their communities and across the nation. By allowing pharmacists to order and administer REGEN-COV — as well as future treatments and medications — at-risk patients can receive the medication and care they need faster and more efficiently than sending patients to a primary care physician or hospital for examination.

“Pharmacists serve in one of the most trusted professions in the country, and as our country struggles to overcome the recent surge of COVID-19 cases, this position of credibility can translate into a marked increase in COVID-19 treatments and vaccinations.”
