AMCP Stakeholder Forum Identifies Pathway to Using Patient Reported Outcomes in Value-Based Health Care System

Alexandria, Va., Oct. 27, 2017 – A recent Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy forum of stakeholders representing payers, patients, government, and pharmaceutical companies found broad consensus on two critical issues: the importance that patient reported outcomes (PRO) can and should play in defining value, improving patient care and implementing value-based payment model and the elements that need to be in place in the health care system to achieve that.

AMCP Partnership Forum “Patient Reported Outcomes: The Missing Link to Defining Value” took place on Oct. 19, 2017, the last day of the AMCP Nexus 2017: Changing the Way We Pay for Health Care fall conference in Dallas.

“Not every health care challenge lends itself to an easy solution,” AMCP CEO Susan A. Cantrell, RPh, CAE observed, “but I could not be more pleased with the progress the participants made in identifying a ‘future state of patient reported outcomes’ ‒ namely, the policies, practices and infrastructure that must be in place for PRO to fulfill its potential in improving patient care and outcomes and implementing value-base care models.”

According to experts, PRO represents a sea change in how the health care system looks at and measures value and the quality of patient care. But the fragmented nature of the system and the divergent perspectives of stakeholders have frustrated efforts to fully implement PRO.

Cantrell continued, “AMCP will now begin the long, hard work of taking the findings from the Partnership Forum and building an ideal state for successfully operationalizing PROs – which, according to the forum participants, means objective, standardized PROs that both can be adapted to disease states and patient needs and set clear expectations for patients, pharmaceutical companies and payers to work collaboratively to improve patient care.”

An AMCP webinar on the results of the forum is scheduled for early 2018, as is the publication of the forum’s proceedings as a part of the Journal of Managed Care & Specialty Pharmacy.
