AMCP Joins Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies to Educate Providers About Illegal Online Pharmacies

Alexandria, Va., December 15, 2016 — The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) is proud to join 16 other national nonprofit health care organizations in raising awareness among the provider community of illegal online pharmacies and counterfeit medications.

The Alliance for Safe Online Pharmacies (ASOP Global) today launched an education campaign to help inform more than 6 million U.S. physicians, pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants about the risks of their patients obtaining medications through illegal online sellers. ASOP Global also launched www.BuySafeRx.pharmacy, where providers, patients and caregivers can quickly verify whether an Internet pharmacy website is safe and legal.

“Academy members work every day to ensure that hundreds of millions of Americans are able to access high quality medications that they can trust,” says AMCP CEO Susan A. Cantrell, RPh, CAE. “We have a direct interest in helping health care providers educate their patients about the dangers of using illegal online sellers to obtain medications, which may be useless, or even worse, very dangerous.”

According to ASOP Global, a recent review of more than 11,000 websites selling prescription drugs to U.S. consumers found that roughly 96 percent of the sellers were in conflict with U.S. laws. In addition, 65 percent of online search results for prescription drugs lead U.S. consumers to illegal and unsafe websites. Meanwhile, only 1.4 percent of more than 1,000 providers who took an ASOP Global continuing education program on internet pharmacies said they had regularly discussed the risks of internet drug sellers with their patients.

Partners in the campaign include major pharmacy, physician, nursing and patient organizations.
