AMCP Foundation Announces Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, The 2022 Steven G. Avey Award Winner
Alexandria, Va., Feb. 28, 2022 — AMCP Foundation is pleased to confer the 2022 Steven G. Avey award to Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, the founding director and Robert J. Margolis, MD, professor of business, medicine, and policy at the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy.
The Avey award recognizes a managed care leader for sustained, exemplary, and distinguished service to the practice of pharmacy. Throughout his more than 30-year career, Dr. McClellan has demonstrated the characteristics of an Avey award winner through his dedication to addressing strategies and policy reforms to improve health care. As the former administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Dr. McClellan played key roles in developing and implementing the Medicare prescription drug benefit, Medicare and Medicaid payment reforms, the FDA’s Critical Path Initiative, and public-private initiatives to develop better information on the quality and cost of care.
“It is my pleasure to bestow managed care pharmacy’s highest honor to Dr. McClellan,” said Executive Director of AMCP Foundation, Paula J. Eichenbrenner, MBA, CAE. “He has consistently demonstrated excellence and dedication to the practice, and we are honored to recognize his contributions.”
Before his current role at Duke University, Dr. McClellan served as a senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution, where he was the director of the health care innovation and value initiatives and led the Richard Merkin Initiative on Payment Reform and Clinical Leadership.
Most recently, Dr. McClellan co-authored a roadmap outlining the steps needed for a comprehensive COVID-19 response and safe reopening of the U.S. His work in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency spans virus containment and testing strategies, reforming health care toward more resilient models of delivering care and accelerating the development of therapeutics and vaccines.
“Congratulations to Dr. Mark McClellan on your well-deserved success. We are celebrating the dedication you’ve shown on the way to this achievement. Your creativity and passion to serve others is an inspiration,” said Annesha White, PharmD, MS, PhD, AMCP Foundation Trustee & Chair, Steven G. Avey Award Committee.
AMCP Foundation will recognize Mark McClellan at AMCP 2022 during the General Session on March 30 at 8:15.
