AMCP Applauds House Passage of Pre-approval Information Exchange Act
Alexandria, Va., June 8, 2022 — AMCP (Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy) applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Pre-approval Information Exchange (PIE) Act of 2022. The bill includes provisions that will empower companies to share critical information with health plans and payers while treatments are still pending Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, a change that can expedite delivery of treatment to millions of patients. The PIE Act was included as Section 810 in the Food and Drug Amendments of 2022 (H.R. 7667), which passed the House 392-28 today.
“Today, Congress took an important step toward increasing efficiency in our health care system,” said AMCP CEO Susan Cantrell, RPh, CAE. “Once enacted, this legislation will get life-saving medicines into the hands of patients sooner, while ensuring the highest level of patient safety. By allowing drug manufacturers to share clinical and economic information with health payers and plans sooner, it will expedite coverage for new therapies or ways to use existing therapies pending FDA approval.”
Sharing information earlier in the approval process will benefit more than 100 million Americans covered under Medicare and Medicaid. These plans have limited ability to modify formularies during a plan year, which can create disparities in treatments for millions of patients. PIE will help Medicare and Medicaid plan more efficiently, which will help level the playing field for beneficiaries while also promoting the shift from fee-for-service to value-based care.
“AMCP thanks Representative Brett Guthrie for his leadership and looks forward to working with the Senate to pass this important, bipartisan legislation,” Cantrell added.
