AMCP Volunteer Spotlight: Teresa Roane

AMCP's volunteers are vital players in propelling our mission forward. In this installment of the AMCP Volunteer Spotlight, we are featuring Teresa Roane, PharmD, MBA, BCACP, CPh. 

What interested you in becoming a volunteer for AMCP and in what areas of AMCP did you volunteer?

I have been a member of AMCP since 2005 when I joined as a student on the advice of the pharmacy director while completing a managed care rotation. I listened to him talk about AMCP and watched as he gained enjoyment from being involved with AMCP. I wanted this same experience. My committee involvement started about five years ago, first with the Academic Affairs committee where I served for three years, and now I am in the middle of my second year with the Membership committee. I also served as the Chair of the Student Affairs committee of our Florida Affiliate for two years and continue to volunteer as a member of that same committee. I was an AMCP diplomat for many years just recently letting someone else take that torch. I am also the faculty advisor for our student chapter of AMCP at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy and serve as a judge for their P&T competition. Over the years, I have encouraged many of my students and residents to join AMCP and get involved!    
 
What value do you think you gained from that experience?

I worked in managed care for five years before transitioning to a faculty position where I teach students about managed care principles and medication therapy management. No longer working directly in a managed care environment, it is very important that I remain connected to ensure I provide updated and correct information to my students. I have learned about hot topics affecting managed care and also expanded my professional network by being involved and volunteering on the committees.  
 
What advice would you give an AMCP member who wants to become a volunteer?

Do it! It may seem overwhelming or intimidating to consider joining a committee of a national organization, but it really isn’t. Everyone at AMCP, and other committee volunteers, are super friendly and helpful especially to committee newbies. The time commitment is also very manageable! 
 
Is there anything else you would like to provide?

I always tell students that pharmacy is a small world and managed care is an even smaller portion of that world (so never burn a bridge!). I love attending the AMCP conferences where I always see so many familiar faces and quite a few of those I have met because of my committee involvement. I hope you will consider volunteering as well—it really is enjoyable, and you are making a difference!
