In Memoriam: Past President Cathy Carroll

Cathy Carroll

It is with great sadness that we report the recent passing of AMCP Past President Cathy Carroll. Cathy was a beloved, long-time member and leader of AMCP. She served as AMCP President from 2008 to 2009 during the tenure of AMCP CEO Judy Cahill.

Cathy's warmth and good humor came through in her April 2008 inaugural address at the Annual Meeting in San Francisco, in which she compared the children's book "Horton Hears A Who" to the past and future successes of AMCP. She noted that the AMCP Founders, like Horton and the Mayor of Whoville, saw the potential for something that no one else saw, and believed in their convictions even in the face of others who questioned their intelligence and mental health. The Mayor of Whoville encouraged his community to unite and shout, she noted. "At AMCP, irrespective of the outcome of the pending elections, mounting a united voice will be paramount to our continued success," Cathy said. To help achieve such a united voice, Cathy sent an email to members each quarter during her presidency asking them to share their voices and convictions in response to priorities of AMCP.

Cathy’s family is presently working with the AMCP Foundation to open a memorial fund to honor her legacy. Funds raised will establish a scholarship for future pharmacists, especially those with a passion for pursuing managed care careers in health and economics outcomes research (HEOR) or industry. Please stay tuned for details.

All AMCP friends and colleagues miss Cathy’s conviction, friendly smile and good humor. We will keep Cathy’s family in our thoughts.
