AMCP Volunteer Spotlight: Matt Moen

AMCP's volunteers are vital players in propelling our mission forward. In this installment of the AMCP Volunteer Spotlight, we are featuring Matt Moen, PharmD, MBA, AMCP Membership Committee member.   

What interested you in becoming a volunteer for AMCP and in what areas of AMCP did you volunteer?

I have served on the AMCP Membership Committee for three years. I’ve also moderated the What Is Managed Care Pharmacy webinar twice, moderated a CE session at AMCP’s national conference, and participated in the Conference Buddy program numerous times. Finally, I’ve served as a judge for the P&T Competition for the AMCP student chapter at MCPHS University.  

I was first exposed to AMCP through a colleague, Michael Tocco. As I learned about the organization, I was impressed by the representation from various stakeholder groups within pharmacy. The participation of members from health plans, pharmacy benefit managers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and other pharmacy-related groups provide a unique opportunity to help shape the field of managed care pharmacy. Volunteering with AMCP felt like a great opportunity to participate in that process. 
 
What value do you think you gained from that experience?

I developed an appreciation for the diverse experience and skill sets that AMCP volunteers bring to the table. I’ve been quite impressed with the level of engagement by committee members. It’s exciting to participate in a group of individuals that are invested in the advancement of the organization and profession. The networking element has been fantastic as well.  
 
What advice would you give an AMCP member who wants to become a volunteer?

Regardless of the size or scope of the volunteer opportunity, just start. I know I initially had hesitations as to what I could readily contribute, but that’s the great part about the diversity of AMCP; there’s no one person that knows everything about managed care pharmacy. We all have unique perspectives that allow us to contribute. 

I would add that AMCP staff have been great in supporting the committees and volunteer engagements. I would encourage interested members to reach out and ask how they can get involved.  
 
Is there anything else you would like to provide? 

The regional affiliates can offer good opportunities to increase your involvement with AMCP. Local networking events and meetings can be a great way to meet AMCP colleagues within your local geography.
