AMCP Releases New Report About Emerging Trends Impacting Managed Care Pharmacy For 2025

Alexandria, Va., March 11, 2025 AMCP Foundation, in partnership with Pfizer, Inc., relaunched the Emerging Trends Impacting Managed Care Pharmacy report highlighting future trends across information technology, therapeutics and diagnostics, payment models, pharmacy operations, and public policy verticals. This report, based on a comprehensive survey, outlines key developments within the broader health care landscape that are likely to have a significant impact on managed care pharmacy. Additionally, within the Journal of Managed Care + Specialty Pharmacy (JMCP), the survey results were analyzed by a group of seasoned industry experts in a series of commentaries.

Important findings include:

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to become more engrained within the managed care pharmacy landscape. For example, 92% of respondents said it is likely that AI will be incorporated into more than 50% of prior authorization reviews. AI will also have a role in protecting managed care and patient data, boosting cybersecurity measures and vigilance against potential attacks.

  • Drug shortages continue to be an area of concern for pharmacy operations, with 62% of respondents saying that the number of active drug shortages will increase by more than 25% within the next five years. Given the decrease in pharmacy locations, patients probably will face greater challenges accessing the medications they need.

  • Affordability is and will remain an important consideration, particularly in the context of pharmaceutical payment models and biosimilars. Fifty-four percent of respondents believe at least half of the states will form prescription drug affordability boards. In addition, with more managed care pharmacy professionals anticipating an uptick in specialty drugs, nearly all respondents (97%) say it’s likely that GLP-1 therapies will increase by at least 25% within the next five years.

Alongside the survey data, the report includes perspectives from several industry experts. These commentators hail from Prime Therapeutics, Aon, Biologics and Biosimilars Collective Intelligence Consortium, CommonHealth Solutions, LLC, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, and more.

The report is part of a larger AMCP Foundation initiative to facilitate deep discussions between health care stakeholders about managed care emerging trends, with a focus on providing opportunities to collaborate on solutions. Insights from both the report and stakeholder discussions will shape the direction of AMCP’s advocacy and membership offerings to move with where the industry is headed.

At AMCP 2025, findings from the report will be displayed during a special education session titled “Future Horizons: Emerging Trends Impacting Managed Care Pharmacy.”
