Health disparities exist throughout the whole U.S. health care system and result in avoidable readmissions, reduced quality of care, higher costs, and lower member satisfaction rates. AMCP held a multidisciplinary stakeholder forum on March 23-24, 2021 to discuss how benefit design is affected by health disparities and the role managed care pharmacy plays in this space. Forum participants represented diverse sectors of the healthcare industry, including integrated delivery systems, health plans, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), biopharmaceutical companies, patient advocacy organizations, health policy researchers, and consulting firms; they considered potential structural issues within the current formulary and benefit design processes that may have led to racial health disparities or inequality. In addition this forum helped identify viable solutions to reduce racial health disparities in the use of drugs and related therapies.
