Migraine is a complex, chronic disease that results in significant patient and economic burden. Migraine ranks second worldwide in terms of years lost due to disability. Direct annual all cause healthcare costs for a migraine patient is over twice that of a non-migraine patient. Indirect costs from the impact of the disease on a patient's ability to function (Absenteeism and presenteeism) total over $35B annually.

Therefore, it is important to appropriately manage a person with migraine who experiences greater than 4 attacks a month (or severe disability from at least two attacks a month) and may benefit from preventive therapy. One of the main goals of preventive therapy is to improve function and reduce disability. Utilizing a stratified care approach to preventive migraine treatment is key to accomplish this goal.
