AMCP’s mission is to enrich the managed care pharmacy workforce by providing educational and experiential opportunities for student pharmacists. AMCP is excited to host an Experiential Program in Association & Leadership Management at our headquarters in Alexandria, VA. This APPE rotation will help student pharmacists learn the fundamentals of association and leadership management including effective communication, education and advocacy. During this APPE rotation, student pharmacists will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the mission, vision, core values, organizational structure, and services of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy.
  • Participate in strategic leadership meetings
  • Identify and analyze high-priority issues in managed care pharmacy, and help determine AMCP’s role in these issues.
  • Develop skills in verbal and written communication, information gathering, evaluation, and analysis for use in a future in managed care pharmacy.
APPE Program Description

The AMCP APPE Experiential Program in Association & Leadership Management schedule is designed to be 5 weeks in duration with a flexible end date.  This is designed to fit most APPE schedule requirements. The APPE is intended to be an elective feature of a school or college of pharmacy’s curriculum-based experiential program. Designated AMCP staff (typically a pharmacist) will serve as preceptors within their department area and students will work cross-functionally with all departments.

Student pharmacists will be exposed to the various facets of AMCP including policy and advocacy, professional affairs, education, business development, the Journal of Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy, the Biologics and Biosimilars Collective Intelligence Consortium (BBCIC) and membership. Student pharmacists will learn about the history of the association, its structure, policies and governance. Student pharmacists will participate in various association activities (as opportunities become available), including meetings, conference calls, public hearings. Dependent upon the interests of the student pharmacist and the needs of AMCP, student pharmacists will engage in a longitudinal project for the duration of their rotation and present their project to AMCP staff.

Due to the wide variation and changing nature of projects and issues facing managed care pharmacy at any one time, as well as the need to ensure each student has the flexibility to shape their experience according to their interests and goals, specific aspects of the rotation will vary from student to student.

Please Note: All APPE Rotations for 2025-2026 will be virtual.

Selection Process

AMCP staff will review all completed applications and will conduct phone interviews with top candidates. Final notifications for applicants will be sent via email no later than January 31, 2025.
