August 2025 Diplomat Spotlight - Shobhna Butler, MBA, PharmD, RPh
How did you become involved in AMCP?
It was my second role in a managed care organization. My manager at the time encouraged me to join AMCP and attend their next Conference, which I did. I have been an active member and try to attend both conferences each year.
What interested you the most about managed care and ultimately led you to pursue a career in managed care pharmacy?
The first AMCP conference I attended was fabulous; it had me hooked! I learned more about managed care, networked with others in the industry, and learned the many roles of a pharmacist. The small group of pharmacists in managed care was helpful and inviting, and it broadened my circle of friends and colleagues.
What was your first job or position in managed care?
My 1st managed care role was for a PBM with a Medicaid plan. Where a retail pharmacist could call our help desk, a team of pharmacists (and me) to discuss the patient’s medication therapy and improve patient access. I thought it was an ingenious idea, and I wanted to become part of the process.
What does a typical day or week look like in your current role?
Every day is different. The best part of my day is that I work from home most days. I sit at a desk with my computer and begin to respond to, activate, initiate, or escalate emails, calls, and presentations. I also travel to either a client or vendor and managed care conferences.
What type of interactions have you had with your AMCP student chapter or school of pharmacy?
I’ve had several interactions. I have presented to the Mercer AMCP Student Chapter, the University of GA, and PCOM’s Student Chapter over the years. I also serve as a Diplomat for Mercer’s AMCP Student Chapter. I have also served as a Faculty Adviser when I was a faculty member at Mercer. During that time, I learned of the chapter’s excitement, and they wanted to learn more about managed care and grow their membership. The AMCP chapter, along with Georgia AMCP pharmacists serving as speakers, established a student symposium and has continued to provide this student event every year.
