Trends in Specialty Management:  Highlights from the EMD Serono 11th Edition Specialty Digest

As the cost trend for specialty pharmaceuticals continues to increase at double digit rates, health care purchasers are looking at ways to effectively manage these costs while at the same time ensuring that patients requiring these therapies receive optimal treatment.  The EMD Serono Specialty Digest™ was originally developed in 2004 with the purpose of becoming the premier reference for managed care decision makers to benchmark their management of specialty pharmacy by surveying leading managed care executives on their specialty drug management strategies.  Since that time, health plans, employers, specialty pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies have relied upon the EMD Serono Specialty Digest™ to identify current and future trends in the management of specialty pharmaceuticals.

The 11th edition, reflecting data collected in December 2014 and January 2015, surveys payers about what strategies are being used and what strategies actually work to manage costs and improve outcomes. New survey topics this year include ancillary contracting strategies, biosimilars benefit design, rebate contracting strategies, and more.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify payers’ current challenges and goals related to specialty drug management.
  • Describe current trends and best practices in specialty drug management under the pharmacy and medical benefit across healthcare payers.
  • Review program savings and effectiveness for current management strategies.
  • Understand key future trends in specialty drug management across the benefits.
